TRUUsT is saddened to share that Rev. Anya Johnston and Terry Cummings are no longer on the steering committee of TRUUsT. Both Anya and Terry profoundly broke the TRUUsT covenant and would not engage in efforts to call them back to covenant.
As a Unitarian Universalist covenanted community of multiply marginalized people, our shared agreements are deeply rooted in our faith and our belief that how we are together is the first and foremost way we can create the change we seek in the world. Without a covenant, there is no trust, and without trust, there can be no TRUUsT.
We want to recognize the toll that oppression and trauma takes on us all. We have compassion for both Anya and Terry and deeply want them to experience safety and healing, even while we have taken steps to prevent them from harming TRUUsT members or the TRUUsT community as a whole. We are particularly aware of (and mourn) the impacts of transmisogyny that have led to trans women and non-binary people who were assigned male at birth having a more difficult time accessing traditional paths to leadership within Unitarian Universalism. We are committed to fighting transmisogyny in ourselves, in TRUUsT, in UUism, and in our wider world—along with fighting racism, classism, ableism, ageism, and all other forms of oppression.
Our pressing task as a TRUUsT community is to deepen our shared agreements and our trust in each other, as well as identifying avenues for strengthening the organization’s leadership moving forward. A gathering of TRUUsT members affirmed Anya and Terry’s removal from the steering committee and we are in search of interim/acting steering committee members who can serve between now and the next in-person gathering of our community.
